The Eiffel Tower was officially opened on March 31st 1889. When it was being constructed, artists and writers complained that they “shall see stretching like a blot of ink the hateful shadow of the hateful column of bolted sheet metal”. Now, however, the tower is a motif of resistance and solidarity

This week we’re recognizing French civil engineer and architect, Gustave Eiffel. He played a significant role in the design of the Statue of Liberty due to experience with wind stresses. He created a structure consisting of a four-legged pylon to support copper sheeting, which made up the body of the statue. Eiffel’s name is most known for the world-famous Eiffel Tower. After retiring from engineering, Eiffel concentrated on meteorology and aerodynamics.
