Bacteria Build Up Resistance to Antibiotics

Scientists warn that bacteria are building-up resistance to current antibiotics, and few new antibiotics are in development. They say steps must be taken today to ensure that antibiotics stay effective as long as possible.

That's why these experts want antibiotics taken-out of animal feed. They say this practice is probably contributing to the rise in antibiotic resistant bacteria. That's why the World Health Organization recommended a halt to the practice of feeding antibiotics to farm animals so they will grow larger, faster. The European Union already has banned the use of antibiotics used to treat humans from animal feed (phase-out began in 1990s, into full effect in 2006). Laura Iiyama has this report.
