The former nuclear power plant site in Philippsburg is set to become one of Germany's largest battery storage hubs, capable of powering approximately 100,000 homes daily. EnBW plans to install a 400 MW / 800 MWh battery system to help balance the grid in real-time as the country transitions to renewable energy sources.
The system operates by capturing excess electricity from wind and solar power when generation exceeds demand. During periods of high demand or low renewable generation, such as cloudy or windless days, the stored energy is fed back into the grid. This approach is crucial for managing the variability of renewable energy sources.
Additionally, the battery system will be integrated with hydrogen-ready gas power plants to provide backup during extended periods of low renewable energy production, enhancing the flexibility and resilience of the energy system.
Strategically located near a major substation and the Ultranet power line, which channels wind power from northern Germany to the industrial south, the Philippsburg site is an ideal choice for supporting grid stability.
Pending final approvals, the battery system could be operational by mid-2027.
