First Digital Pill Approved to Worries About Biomedical 'Big Brother'

The medicine, an antipsychotic drug, has a sensor that will show doctors whether and when patients are taking it. Other medicines will follow, experts say.

The sensor is about the size of a grain of sand. It's activated when it comes into contact with stomach fluid. The sensor detects and records the date and time the pill is ingested.
Abilify MyCite is a tablet with an embedded sensor activated by fluid in the stomach. Although the drug's approval is a big step for digital medicine, there are concerns about privacy and cost.
