Dmitry Mendeleev: The teachings of a prophet 德米特里·門得列夫
Congratulations to Vincenzo Balzani and Yuri Oganessian, winners of the first UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize in the Basic Sciences! It is awarded to scientists who work in the spirit of Dmitry Mendeleev – using science to promote peaceful & prosperous societies.
While periodic law and the periodic table raised Mendeleev's name to the ranks as one of the most famous Russian scholars, less than one-tenth of his research is devoted to chemistry. In fact, much of Mendeleev’s research was devoted to what we now call the concept of sustainable development, the rational management of natural resources and ecology.
Although, obviously, these fields of knowledge and academic disciplines did not exist at the time when Mendeleev lived, he perceived the need to prevent the excessive exploitation of natural resources – to inform people about the exhaustibility of minerals, and to call for the parsimonious consumption of oil, water and coal. He was fiercely critical of what we now call oligarchy and corruption and he believed that any possibility of a monopoly of natural resources should be eradicated.
